Guar is the source of a natural hydrocolloid, which is cold water soluble and form thick solution at low concentrations. The guar seed consists of three parts: the seed coat (14-17%), the endosperm (35-42%), and the germ (43-47%). It is from the endosperm that guar gum is derived, which is the prime marketable product of the plant. This spherical shaped endosperm contains significant amounts of galactomannan gum (19 to 43% of the whole seed), which forms a viscous gel in cold water. Like other legumes, guar is an excellent soil-building crop with respect to availability of nitrogen. Root nodules contain nitrogen-fixinbacteria and crop residues, when ploughed under, improves yields of succeeding crops.
Guar gum is a high quality natural gum. It is natural powder processed from the guar plant endosperm, its chemical composition includes nectar, galactan, protein, fiber, water and a small amount of calcium and magnesium. Chromatographic identification for purified guar gum shows that galactose and mannose ratio is 1: 2, the total sugar content is 85%.
Its mainly used in the food industry, petroleum industry, textile industry and construction. For example, guar gum can be used as a thickener for fracturing fluid, flocculant for geological drilling fluid, paper industry additives, silk and textile sizing printing paste, ceramic industry enhancer, new type paint for battery manufacturing industry, building materials and refractories binder and food industry thickener and stabilizer. It also can be used wastewater treatment.
